Intensive Care Unit/Critial Care

Four ICU stalls, and an additional three isolation stalls are available at Fox Run Equine Center.  We are able to monitorcritical patients 24 hours per day.  We have an in-stall video camera to monitor these patients, as well as late gestation mares.   Using a coiled IV set, horses can remain as comfortable as possible and move about, rather than being stationary in the stall.

We can run large volumes of intravenous fluids and electrolytes.  With our in-house laboratory, we are able to monitor blood parameters at any time, to better tailor our care to each individual horse.  Fox Run clinicians are also versed in using Total Parenteral Nutrition (IV nutrition) for those cases that cannot eat or may have severe endocrinopathies or liver damage.

Critical care cases include:

  • Severe respiratory disease
  • Diarrhea/colitis
  • Colic
  • Neonatal care
  • High risk pregnancy
  • Acute renal failure
  • Hepatoencephalopathy (liver disease)

Fox Run also runs a critical care unit for neonates in need of specialized, individual care.

Our ICU stalls have padded flooring, and each stall has a separate ventilation system.
